A lesson from Self-Defense

February 19, 2011

A few months ago I took a course in self-defense with Vicki Krentz, who runs the Women’s Shooting Academy. We spoke about topics like what to do if you are walking on the street alone at night or on campus walking to your car. Vicki described to the class that as a woman you should always be in the “white.” The white was the color she used to describe being the most aware of your surroundings.  What you didn’t want to do was be in the red and completely unaware of your surroundings.  Anyone should be aware of their surroundings, but women especially should. Let’s face it ladies, we unfortunately will never be as physically strong as a man.

I feel these same lessons apply in business for any woman. If you are in business and a woman you have to be aware of what is going on around you.  You can’t simply let people walk all over you just because you are a woman.  No, you have to notice your surroundings and stand up for yourself.  Just like in self-defense, your number one priority is you. When you take care of yourself, then you can take care and help those around you.

So ladies if there is a lesson to be learned here is that be aware of your surroundings. Whether at work or just walking to your car, your surroundings can change your life in an instant. So take a lesson from Vicki as I did, make sure you protect yourself first and foremost and then take care of those you love and care for.

  1. Amber,

    What a great post!
I’ve been trying to find a good self-defense class for a while now. Not just a self-defense class that just ends up being like a kickboxing class.. Could you please provide more information on this class you did? I would greatly appreciate it!

    Keep writing 🙂

    • Hey Jaana, Ya no problem. The lady I took the class from is named Vicki Krentz. All you have to do is Google the Women’s Shooting Academy and you will find her. She was really good and informative and I learned a lot about just things I should be aware of. I know it’s kind of scary for us to have to think like that but it’s better to be prepared. Hope that helps, if you can’t find her online let me know and I’ll find her number or email. Thanks for the reply and hope you had luck with the computer!

  2. Amber.

Thank you for that information, greatly appreciated! Will definitely look into it! 🙂
