When is Technology Too Much?

March 9, 2011

In today’s digital age, how do we know when enough is enough? I recently was on the phone with my friend talking about all these new gadgets and tools. In today’s world we have laptops, pc’s, iPhones, droids, ipads, and so much more. Yet, how do we know when being this connected is too much? Personally, I didn’t really dial in with the digital age until recently. I found that I was fighting all this new technology for a long time. I was trying to avoid getting a smart phone and really anything else that was the latest and greatest gadget. I did have a MAC laptop but that was pretty much it up until now. Then I got the iPhone last week and boy have things changed. I have to admit, I wasn’t really into getting myself an iPhone. Actually, it was my boyfriend who convinced me finally to get one and even then I was a bit hesitant. However, now that I have one I have to admit I love it.

So why go off on this tangent? Well because I think I have finally become one of those people. One of those people who used to annoy me because they were always on their phone or computer or some other kind of technological device. Yet now I am one of them. I’m constantly either on my new phone or on my computer. I always have to know about the latest and greatest news whether it is from Twitter, Facebook or Yelp. Yet, I struggle with my new-found love. Why do we have to stay and be connected at all times? When did it become acceptable to be texting while out to dinner or when having lunch with a friend? I remember the days when we all used to just sit around and chat for a few hours. Nowadays, we are bombarded so much with social media and technology, that we are constantly inundated with it all. So I pose this question…When is technology too much? When do you know that you are taking your Twitter addiction to the next level? I think the answer maybe that there is no answer. Maybe it is all up to you and your personal comfort with technology and all that it has to offer. Now, don’t get me wrong, if you think your crackberry is more important to you than listening to your spouse for instance, than you may have a problem. So think about it for yourself. Maybe ask yourself do I “need” technology or is it just nice to have? Let me know what your thoughts are on technology and it’s influence on your life. I appreciate all the comments!
